Summerhayes – Silvers Open – 30th September 2023

A double header at Summerhayes this weekend, starting with a silvers open on Sellicks. Nick and me stopped at the new McDonalds in Ilminster for breakfast which wasn’t great and didn’t really fill me up! Quite a busy car park again with 14 anglers fishing this one which is a decent number for Sellicks. Pete got the draw underway and when it was my turn, I pulled out 15 which is one of my favourite pegs, for company I had Zooner on 14 with Alex the other side on 16.

I set up my usual Guru 0.3 gram AR’s and 0.2 gram Bobbies plus a 4 x 12 Preston F1 Maggot, all with size 16 Guru F1 Pellet hooks to 0.10mm. On the whistle I fed a top kit line to the right and two 10 metre swims with groundbait (Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark) and also began flicking a few maggots across to the island on a regular basis.

As per usual I started short but after ten minutes the only indication had resulted in a lost carp before I moved out to 10 metres. My first fish was a nice roach and by swapping between the left and right hand lines I was catching some decent roach along with the odd skimmer. Alex was catching roach well and Glynn down past him on 18 was getting some big leapers fishing long.

I was doing alright as far as I could tell and then hooked a fish that after initially tearing off, didn’t give me too many problems before a lovely pound plus perch came to the net! The wind got up after an hour or so and although we were fairly sheltered at the top end, the pegs further down were getting a bit of a chop on! I was still getting odd fish but suffering some quiet spells and was sure it was only a matter of time before carp became a pain as there were loads showing themselves.

Another elastic stretcher had me thinking carp but it turned out to be another good perch. With three hours gone, bites were definitely slowing up so it was time to try 13 metres for the first time. It took a little while to get a bite and when I struck into solid resistance I was sure I’d hooked a carp but shipping back it was behaving itself and then a lovely 1.5lb crucian popped up which was a nice bonus.

I’ve had a lovely hour or so catching skimmers, some cracking roach and two more 1lb+ perch before sport slowed again but I was getting enough bites to stick with it. Alex was still getting a few but mainly roach and not many skimmers while Glynn was starting to suffer some carp trouble. With around an hour left, everybody seemed to have slowed up and I was going to drop back on the 10 metre lines but decided to have a quick look at 14.5 metres first.

It wasn’t fast and furious but I added a couple more decent skimmers and some lovely roach to finish with 54 fish (1 crucian, 4 perch, around 15 skimmers and the rest roach) and I’d only hooked a few carp, a lovely day. Gabe’s missus came round and said the man in the blue hat on peg 9 (Nick) had caught well while Gabe was admitting to 10lb.

I packed up and walked round to watch the weigh in, McKenzie on peg 2 had done well with 9lb 13oz which included a nice tench and then Gabe had some big skimmers for 16lb 1oz to go into the lead. John Fuidge on 5 and Bruce on peg 6 chucked back, Jeff weighed 8lb 15oz which included an eel and then Nick had a nice net of silvers for 12lb 12oz.
