Summerhayes – Silvers Open – 24th August 2024

For the start of a busy Bank Holiday weekend I headed to Summerhayes for the silvers open on Sellicks although there were only six of us fishing so more of a knock up really. After a stop off at Greggs for breakfast, I arrived in good time and Pete said it would be draw and choose, I was last but one to draw and got first choice so went for my favourite peg 16.

The water level was very low and when I plumbed up, it was only around 18 inches deep all the way across which was a bit of a worry! I set up a 0.2 gram rig for two lines at 11.5 metres and another for across to the island at 14.5 metres. I’ve just started using the 1.20mm Colmic Hybrid Royal latex elastic which I’m well impressed with so far. On the side tray were lots of maggots plus some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark groundbait.

On the whistle I fed some loose groundbait on the 11.5 metre lines and began pinging maggots across. I had a nice roach quite quickly and by swapping between the two shorter lines, was getting regular bites from some decent skimmers and roach. After an hour, Roy down on 22 shouted up that he’d only had two skimmers and Alex on 24 hadn’t caught one yet. I couldn’t see Tom, Dan or McKenzie on the other side but felt I was doing okay in the early stages.

Normally I try and stay at 11.5 metres for two hours before going across on the longer lines but I was catching really well including a nice 1.5lb crucian plus a 6oz perch. Bites began to fade as we reached the halfway point so I had my first look at 14.5 metres and it was really good with more skimmers and roach. Despite loads of carp mooching about, I’d only had a few little pasties although I was sure their larger brethren would become a problem before too long.

I caught well across for an hour but then suffered a catapult malfunction when the elastic snapped so dropped back in on the shorter line while I fixed it. Four nice skimmers kept the catch rate ticking over although I also had a leaper come off. With my running repairs complete, I went back across for the last hour. I normally use single maggot as there aren’t many small silvers in Sellicks but I was getting more roach then skimmers so tried double red maggot and although I was waiting longer for bites the fish were a better stamp.

The last sixty minutes were brilliant and I had another 15 fish including some nice skimmers, big roach and another 1.5lb crucian to finish with 55 fish. After packing up, I went round to watch the weigh in which started with Tom R on peg 2 who had 5lb 4oz, Dan T was on 4 and had some big skimbobs for 17lb 10oz.

Dan T on peg 4 had 17lb 10oz of skimmers

McKenzie didn’t weigh and then I was next, my fish went 26lb 10oz, Roy had 14lb 8oz and last to weigh was Alex who had 16lb 1oz.

Alex had some big skimmers on peg 24 for 16lb 1oz

1 – Jamie Rich (Bait-Tech/Colmic) – 26lb 10oz
2 – Dan Taggert (Summerhayes) – 17lb 10oz

I picked up £50 and enjoyed every minute of that, it’s just a shame we don’t get a few more turn up as the silvers fishing on Sellicks is brilliant with quality fish and decent weights which can come from any peg.
