Acorn Fishery – Open – 23rd November 2024

After having quite a bit of snow in the week which caused chaos per usual, the rubbish weather was set to continue all weekend with Storm Bert determined to wreak havoc with strong winds and heavy rain – great! Nick and me were at Acorn for another of Foxy’s matches and along with everyone else were hoping for a peg that might offer a modicum of shelter. Our wishes were dashed when we both ended up on the island (number 4 for me and 2 for Nick) but to be fair, although exposed they’re normally decent pegs for silvers.

Windy

With the forecast and tackle preservation in mind, I only set up one rig, a Preston Innovations F1 Maggot and just got a top kit and two sections out of the holdall. Maggots, disco pinkies and some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark groundbait on the side tray.

On the whistle I fed groundbait and a few pinkies on two lines, a top kit plus one and plus two. Starting on the (slightly) longer line, a positive bite after a couple of minutes resulted in a small roach to get me off the mark, or it would have done if I hadn’t missed the keepnet with it!

It was fishing hard with not a lot being caught apart from Mark on 5 and Joanna on 9 who were both getting odd carp on the feeder. By the halfway point, I only had two carp and both of them were foulhooked!

I did think a few fish might feed in the ‘golden last hour’ but I only had one more carp (hooked in the mouth this time) and my silvers net remained empty! Nick had two carp and two roach while the chap on peg 1 chucked back.

A tough day for most and it didn’t take long for the scales to reach us, Nick weighed 6lb 8oz and my fish went 8lb 15oz. Mark had a nice day to win the match with 56lb 10oz and Jo was second with 50lb 10oz. Dave Manning had the top silvers weight with two perch for 3lb 3oz. Crazy when you know how many fish are in there and I think just two skimmers were caught!

1 – Mark Birdseye (Acorn) – 56lb 10oz
2 – Joanna Wingate (Acorn) – 50lb 10oz
3 – Brian Slipper (Acorn) – 40lb 13oz
4 – Robert Fogg (Acorn) – 28lb 5oz
5 – Chris Fox (Acorn) – 25lb 12oz

Silvers
1 – Dave Manning (Acorn) – 3lb 3oz
