This book has been on my radar for a while now but I hadn’t got round to buying a copy yet so when the publishers Merlin Unwin got in touch and asked if I’d like to review it, I didn’t require asking twice!
When it arrived I couldn’t wait to get stuck in and I have to say it’s a delight! In this book Peter May perfectly captures the joys of club match fishing, although obviously an integral component, there’s so much more to it than actually just catching fish! You have all the different characters, lots of banter, micky taking and of course intense (but still friendly) rivalries between anglers competing for the various club championships and trophies.
I’m sure most clubs up and down the country are very similar in many respects but I very much enjoyed a little glimpse into the world of Plough Angling Club (PAC) and getting to know some of the anglers that fish each week and the venues they visit.
Each chapter deals with a match or practice session throughout the year targeting different species at various rivers, canals and ponds. I liked that the journey starts on June 16th and we follow Peter’s exploits through to the seasons close in the last chapter. Along the way we’re introduced to some of the clubs personalities, all with interesting backgrounds or stories to tell.
All the sections are also packed with fascinating facts as the author tells us a bit more about the species he’s hoping to catch, the waterways he’s fishing, the history of the sport and evolution of the tackle we use. If I’m honest, although interesting, these little nuggets of info were a bit of an aside for me and I just wanted to get back to the main event, the fishing matches themselves!
There were quite a few little incidents along the way that made me chuckle and I’m sure the majority of us have been in similar situations but you’ll have to buy a copy to find out what they were! I didn’t want the book to finish and it definitely left me wanting more, in one of the chapters he was fishing a match, doing well and I was genuinely on the edge of my seat for the outcome. I’ve always loved the fishing diary style of article/book (hence the blog!) and I’d love to see ‘Another End Peg’ published.
