Summerhayes – Open – 10th November 2024

I’d really enjoyed my last match on Longs a few weeks previous with lots of bites from small fish along with the odd better skimmer and some crucians so was looking forward to another go. The car park was busy with 24 booked in for Longs and another match on Sellicks as well.

With quite a few anglers on the lake today, I really fancied number 13 which is probably one of the most consistent silvers pegs on Longs. I was first on the list to draw and couldn’t quite believe it when I pulled out the exact peg I wanted! To be honest with the way my lucks been lately, I was half expecting a redraw so waited until all the pegs had been taken before heading to mine.

I had Roy Hughes on my left on 15 and Dan T was next door the other side and both would be fishing for silvers as per usual.

Rigs for today were a 0.1 gram Colmic Elsa for two lines at top four plus 13 metres and a 0.2 gram rig for across to the island at 14.5 metres. A nice simple side tray with lots of maggots, disco pinkies plus some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark groundbait.

On the whistle I fed a little groundbait with some pinkies on the top four lines and 13 metres and also pinged a few maggots across. Starting short it took a little while to get bites and I had a few roach along with a couple of 3-4oz skimbobs and a nice little 6oz tench. Dan was catching quicker fishing a section further out so after about an hour, I began a new line at five sections and had a nice run of fish including three little tench.

Roy was fishing soft pellets long and catching little skimmers regularly while my shorter lines were beginning to fade as we passed the two hour mark. Moving out to 13 metres, I had a few more hand size skimbobs and started another line to the left and swapped between the two, catching quite well including a nice little tench from this new line.

With around two hours to go, I had my first look at 14.5 metres and although not fast and furious, my catch rate was still ticking over. I didn’t think there was much between Roy and me but he did have two decent skimmers which I thought might give him the edge. Going into the last hour, I’ve added the dolly butt and was getting a few fish although I was hooking the odd carp as well. I did have my first decent skimmer around 10oz and next chuck had a chunky roach.

At the all out, I had around 80 fish which I thought would give me in the region of 8-9lb but I didn’t think that would be enough. After packing up, I went to give Adie a hand with the weigh in, Tony Thick on 37 was first to the scales and set the marker with an excellent 65lb 2oz of carp. Tom was next on peg 1 and had also done well with 48lb 1oz, then it had been quite hard for the others on ‘Cyanide Straight’, Bill H weighed 1lb 9oz of silvers, Kev O chucked back and Oscar on peg 5 had 15lb 11oz.

I had a nice pick up of £75 for winning the silvers and it had been a lovely days fishing with plenty of bites and not too much carp trouble (I think I only hooked four all day!).

The Nugget-O-Meter had a brilliant day thanks to donations from Nick P (£3), me (£3), Rob Wylde (£1) and Craig Lyttle (£1) plus pound side bets from Dan T and Zooner helped the total hit £504 which is amazing so a huge thanks to everyone that has contributed.
