With some leave to use up, I booked Tuesday off and headed up to Acorn for the costcutter along with Parker ‘The Pole’. 28 anglers fishing today which is a great turnout for a midweek match. Eddie announced the draw and I was hoping for a nice silvers peg, something like 38 or 40 would do nicely please! When I looked at my little ball, my home for the day was 15 over on the far side and not really where you wanted to be for silvers although it can be alright for carp which isn’t my thing!
It was flat calm and foggy after a chilly start and a tough day looked to be on the cards. I set up a couple of Preston Innovations F1 Maggots to fish two lines at 10 metres and top two plus one and a little 0.2 gram rig with strung shot to fish through the water across at 13 metres. Lots of maggots, disco pinkies and Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark groundbait were on the menu for today.
On the whistle I fed all my lines before starting at 10 metres straight out, no indications there so went right across with the little light rig hoping to catch some of those ide. I missed a couple of bites before pulling out of a small fish and at this early stage I hadn’t seen much caught. It took 45 minutes before I got off the mark with a nice skimmer from the 10 metre swim. A small roach followed but then couldn’t get a bite again.
Moving to the 10 metre line down the middle to the right I had a nice ide and a couple of roach including a decent one but then had to wait ages for my next bite which was a tench of a pound. Swapping between those two lines I was getting odd fish but it wasn’t hectic, I’d been feeding the top kit plus one line all match and was hoping for good things when I dropped in on it with 90 minutes remaining but never had a bite there.
Back on the 10 metre line, I did have a couple of skimmers but also pulled out of one and also lost what felt like a big tench. At the all out, my clicker had 16 fish on it (3 skimmers, 1 tench, 6 ide and 6 roach) and I hadn’t hooked a carp all match!
When the scales got round to us, Kev Perry on 12 weighed 24lb 7oz (including 5lb 9oz of silvers), Joanne on 13 had 14lb 1oz, my silvers went 8lb 14oz and then the guy on my left blanked but he did have to fish short all day after snapping his pole.
Andy Gard on 17 weighed 2lb 8oz of silvers, Simon Stacey had 27lb 6oz, Phil Cooper by the bridge on 21 weighed 9lb 10oz of silvers, Lee Waller had 21lb 11oz and Steve P on 25 didn’t weigh. It had been really hard going on our side and even Des on 27 only weighed 10lb 11oz of silvers and 13lb of carp.
Back at the results and there had been some great weights with Matt Vowles winning comfortably on peg 5 with 103lb 2oz followed by Ray Cooper with 57lb from peg 7. Gary Bowden topped the silvers with 21lb on peg 4 and Sue Faiers was second with 20lb 1oz from peg 4 beating hubbie Paul (who weighed 10lb 14oz) off the next peg.
1 – Matt Vowles – 103lb 2oz
2 – Ray Cooper – 57lb
3 – Gary Flinders – 48lb 6oz
4 – Bob Feltham – 35lb 2oz
5 – Mo Everett – 32lb 14oz
