Summerhayes – Open – 16th March 2025

I seem to be constantly behind with the blog so apologies if you’ve been eagerly awaiting the results of my last couple of matches (unlikely I know!). Sunday it was Summerhayes again and although we had yet another frost, it was actually shaping up to be a rather nice day. A Baker’s Dozen fishing and as per usual I was hoping to draw along the track or my favourite peg 13 (although I didn’t realise it wasn’t actually in today!).

When I was called up to draw, I managed to avoid my preferred pegs and pulled out number 10, hopefully worth a few fish but with Roy Hughes on 12 and some great silvers anglers over in the 30’s, I knew I was up against it.

It was a gorgeous day

I set up a 0.1 gram Elsa for a couple of lines at top five and 11.5 metres plus a 0.2 gram Bobbie for two lines across to the island. On the whistle I fed all my lines before starting short, I did think it might be quite slow to begin with but a positive bite after a few minutes resulted in a 4oz skimbob. I was getting regular bites from ide, roach and small skimmers but every time I looked behind me, I could see Roy netting what looked like decent skimmers.

I’ve caught quite well for two hours before it slowed so moved to the 11.5 metre swim and had another nice run of fish including a skimmer of 8oz. At the halfway point, apart from Roy, I couldn’t really see anyone else catching silvers and thought there was a good chance of finishing second. Going to 13 metres I had a few fish but it was short lived, adding the 14.5 metre section, I’ve had a pound skimmer quite quickly along with a few ide and roach.

I pulled out of a decent skimmer and basically ticked over for the rest of the match to finish up with 76 fish and I haven’t hooked a carp all day (ideal!). Roy had caught well and I was sure he’d won by a decent margin but I was hoping I’d done enough for second until somebody said Bill had bagged up on golden peg 36.

Dan T was first to weigh on 39 and had 13lb 3oz (including 4lb 5oz of silvers), Steve Collins on 3 did well catching 9lb 7oz of silvers and 17lb 10oz of carp and then Glynn on 7 was the early leader with 34lb 9oz of carp. My fish went 13lb 9oz which was a nice days fishing and then Roy had a brilliant 19lb 8oz of skimmers.

After winning the silvers match the previous day, Roy weighed 19lb 8oz of skimmers to make it a very successful weekend

Kev O’ on 14 weighed 15lb 11oz of mainly carp, Dave Bull did well on 18 with 7lb 11oz of silvers and then Hollywood on 20 went into the overall lead with 37lb 2oz, Nick P spent another day on the ‘dark side’ to weigh 25lb 10oz and Rob Birch on 30 had 7lb 2oz of silvers which included a big 2lb+ perch. Rog C weighed 8lb of silvers and then Toby on 34 had 62lb 8oz of mainly carp which would win comfortably. Last to weigh was Bill ‘The Paste’ and when he pulled his net out, it was going to be very close for a bumper payday but the digital display settled on 19lb 6oz – ouch!
