With some leave to use up, I had a week off work and booked into a couple of matches starting with a costcutter at Acorn, the weather was supposed to be nice but it was really windy and cold first thing! 23 anglers fishing today and when it was my turn to draw I pulled out 16 on the far side, an area I seem to frequent a lot! The wind was off my back which would be a bit of a bonus as some of the pegs on the near side would have it right in their chops. For company I had Mo and Jo on either side with Des down on 13.
I set up a couple of Preston Innovations F1 Maggots to fish 11.5 metres straight out and angled to the left plus a top four line and a little 0.2 gram rig with strung shot to fish through the water across at 13 metres. On the side tray I had lots of maggots, disco pinkies and some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark.
At the all in, I fed all my lines before starting across pinging maggots and after a few minutes had a decent ide. I was getting regular bites and had a lovely two hours catching ide, roach, odd skimmers, a hybrid, a couple of small tench and two nice perch before bites slowed. The 11.5 metre groundbait line was next and I had a little run of fish but it was short lived so I moved to the line angled down the middle to the left where I’d been big potting maggots. It took a while to get a bite and I had four nice roach and an ide before pulling out of a small tench or carp and then couldn’t get a bite.
I had a few more ide from 13 metres but it didn’t last long so it was time to try the short line where I’d been feeding maggots since the start. There were quite a few bubbles coming up and my first fish was a pound tench. It felt like there were a lot of fish there as I was getting loads of indications and the last hour and a half was really good. I had another six tench (including two that were 4lb+), a couple of big skimmers along with my second carp and didn’t want the match to end.
As the scales reached us, I went to have a look and there were a lot of close weights, Bob Smith on 7 had 108lb 13oz, Kev Perry (peg 11) weighed 104lb 6oz, Gary Bowden on 12 had 107lb 7oz and then Des weighed 104lb 8oz but was cursing the loss of a big carp right at the end. Jo had 62lb 15oz and then it was me, it was a good job I started a second silvers net as I weighed 40lb 4oz in total and there’s a strict limit of 40lb for silvers!, Mo also had a nice bag of silvers weighing 22lb 11oz.
Back at the results and Tony W had the top weight with an excellent 150lb 11oz from peg 4, I won the silvers picking up £27 and Paul Faiers was second with 30lb 1oz on peg 38.
