Todber Manor – Silvers Open – 2nd April 2025

The next day it was down to Todber for the Wednesday silvers match on Ash, ten of us fishing today and after another cracking brekkie I employed my usual tactic of having one of the last tickets. Peg 72 for me with Nigel Bartlett on my left and an empty peg to my right with Sean Rhodes on 74. Although It was very windy, it was mainly off our backs so hopefully it wouldn’t be too problematic.

I set up the usual rigs, a Preston Innovations F1 Maggot for 13 metres plus a 0.2 gram rig to fish through the water and the feeder stick was assembled for another outing. A nice and simple side tray with lots of maggots and some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark.

On the whistle I fed the pole lines before kicking off across on the maggot feeder and started catching some nice ide. Despite the usual missed bite madness I had a steady two hours putting 18 fish in the net for probably 10lb and by all accounts was doing well. The wind was proving to be a right pain and Nigel was having a nightmare with kit being blown in the lake, tangled rigs etc and I’m sure I heard the odd naughty word coming from his general direction!

I’d been feeding maggots on the pole line for 2.5 hours and when I had two decent roach in quick succession I thought it was going to really good but then couldn’t get a bite. Back on the feeder I had three ide before it died and from doing well I was now struggling. Another go on the pole resulted in a decent skimmer but that was it so I spent the remaining hour fishing the feeder and had a nice spell catching five ide and a skimmer.

The scales started up our end with Dale on 75 weighing 12lb 8oz, Sean had 8lb 6oz, my 38 fish went 23lb 12oz and Nigel had chucked back. I thought I was going to just miss out as towards the end of the match they’d started catching some big skimmers to my left so it was a nice surprise when Guy handed me a envelope containing £30 for third place. Andy Akehurst proved once again he’s the man to beat with a winning 32lb on peg 68 and the super consistent Matt Skyme was second with 25lb 12oz.

As always there were lots of close weights with just a few fish in it and I was left wishing I’d just stayed on the feeder all match.
