Angler’s Mail Feature

Back in 2012, I realised a long term ambition when I did a feature for Match Fishing magazine (here’s what I said about it then), with Steve Lockett on the Isle, fast forward to now and when the chance arose to do a feature on chub fishing with Brian Gay for the Angler’s Mail, needless to say I jumped at the chance.

The Archives – Part 7 – The Journey Continues (1989-1992)

1989 The first match of the year was on the Isle and I drew a peg at Ilford, a fairly non descript straight  just up from peg 55 (The Xmas Peg), as I was setting up, Scotty Russell walked by (he used to fish the river a lot back then) and said there was a shoal of big roach in my swim

Hebditch’s Pond – Barney’s Pairs Open – 25th February 2018

Always one of my favourite matches of the year and an event myself and Justin have a pretty good record in, so when I text him to make sure he was fishing and he replied he couldn’t make it this year, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to find anyone to partner me! Scott Jackson had mentioned a while back he might

Welcome to the new Against Men and Fish!

I would like to welcome you to the new Against Men and Fish, it’s been in the pipeline a little while and hopefully you’ll like it. Why a new site, you may ask, well everything I’ve read about blogs and blogging says you need your own domain name and your own hosting, basically your own little corner of the web. I’ve been thinking

River Isle – V.E.S. Precision League 7 – 18th February 2018

Before I get on to this weeks post, I heard the terrible news that the legend Charlie Barnes passed away yesterday, I didn’t know Charlie that well although ours paths crossed on the Isle a few times many years ago. More recently I used to see him at Summerhayes quite a bit and, like me, he used to love fishing for the

River Isle – IBC Winter League 9 – 11th February 2018

The cold snap continued through the week and with quite a bit of rain on Friday I was starting to think we might be on the pond for the first time this year. I popped down to have a look at the river on Saturday and it looked perfect and with not much rain forecast for the rest of the day or

River Isle – Open – 4th February 2018

In last weeks post, I shared some great feedback I’d received, I wasn’t ‘angling’ (if you’ll excuse the pun!) for nice comments but it would seem that the blogs readers are a lovely lot and I just had to share a selection of the awesome things you had to say, thank you all so much, it means a lot to know you like what

River Isle – IBC Winter League 8 – 28th January 2018

I popped down to have a look at the river on Saturday and it looked spot on with a tinge of colour and at Hambridge there were fish topping and with no rain of any consequence forecast, by the next day it should be fining down and perfect. The following morning I stopped at Horlicks to have a quick look and there

River Isle – V.E.S. Precision League 6 – 21st January 2018

This week was the penultimate round of the V.E.S. Precision league and with Adie having a four point lead he was looking good to win the league for the second year running. Mathematically it was still feasible to catch him although he’d have to blow out big style in the two remaining rounds and I just couldn’t see it happening. I popped down to

River Isle – IBC Winter League 7 – 14th January 2018

It got cold in the week and with hardly any rain, the river was back to being low and clear and with eleven booked in we’d have to use Hambridge again but how would it fish this week? We hadn’t had a frost and it actually felt fairly mild which hopefully was a good sign. I got to the bowling club for the
